Mining and smelting are power hungry and they leave a mark. Our answer has been to generate our own clean power, mitigate what we can measure, and keep investing in the district we have operated in for four generations.

Energy

From rice husk to sunlight.

Power is among the highest costs in both mining and alloy production. Reducing it and cleaning it up are the same project.

The group's first answer, in 2007, was a captive power plant designed to burn rice husk — a waste product of the rice mills all around Balaghat. It solved a power shortage and used something that would otherwise have been discarded.

The second answer was solar. Vacant land and worked-out dump areas at the mine, ground with no other productive use, have been converted into solar farms using current-generation panels. Power generated is consumed on site; surplus goes to the grid.

Five megawatts are installed today. The next expansion takes that to between 15 and 25 megawatts.

Planting at the plant, around the mine and in the surrounding villages, so the area stays green. The programme continues.

Nothing wasted

Sub-grade mineral is stacked separately rather than discarded, and briquettes and aggregates are made so the full range of ore grades gets used.

Health & safety

An unforgiving industry, worked carefully.

Alloys and steel are demanding industries with genuinely extreme working conditions. The regulations are strict, and rightly so — but compliance is the floor, not the objective.

  • Protective equipment as standard: helmets, ear plugs, goggles and protective suits shielding workers from heat.
  • Clean drinking water, proper rest areas and first aid arrangements on site.
  • Regular training covering what to do, what to avoid and how to protect yourself.
  • New joiners work through staged training before being given responsibility, under continuous supervision.
  • Standard operating procedures followed throughout, with ISO-certified health and safety monitoring.

Community

Before it was called social responsibility.

Our family has been established in this area for four generations, and has taken the view throughout that you give back to the place you have gained from.

  1. The first college in the area

    Constructed by our family and donated to the government, for the education of the district. Schools have been renovated since, and temples and public places built or restored as needed.

  2. Our own foundation

    Working in the villages in and around the plant on whatever they need: social facilities, playgrounds, plantation, school renovation.

  3. Through the state portal

    Corporate social responsibility work is now routed through the Government of Madhya Pradesh's CSR portal, where we take on listed projects using the designated CSR budget.

  4. Employment as the real dividend

    In a district with few industries, the direct and indirect employment created by mining and manufacturing has done more for local livelihoods than any programme — and it compounds across generations.
